Kinneff Old Church played an important role in Scottish history when, in the 17th century, the Scottish crown jewels were hidden there under a floor by the then Minister and his wife who had smuggled them out of Dunnottar Castle when English invaders decided to starve its inhabitants into surrender. The Free Church of Kinneff was built in 1843 a short distance away on the main road to Aberdeen which latterly served the villages of Kinneff and Catterline, but has now closed. There is a graveyard at Kinneff Old Church, and at Catterline, which also has a graveyard at St. Philip's Episcopal Church (which is linked to St. James Episcopal Church in Stonehaven).
